Even though we want our children live happy lives, we know that life has its ups and downs. Sometimes things will be difficult for them. To live a successful life, our children have to be able to manage the negative side of the emotional spectrum. We may wish or otherwise, but negativity is part of life. It’s almost certain that at times our children will feel a certain degree of anxiety.

However sometimes things get out of balance and the child develops an anxiety disorder, which is a fearful way of approaching everything in life. With an anxiety disorder, the anxiety a child experiences is way out of proportion to the situation. It is definitely not a good thing.
As parents, one of our responsibilities is to help our children learn to handle difficult emotions gracefully and effectively without developing problems that might haunt them into adulthood. Of course anxiety disorders affect adults as well as children. The fact that these problems have become so common in kids is a sad commentary on our world.
To begin with a definition, anxiety is a feeling of tenseness or nervousness or even fear. It may be associated with something going on in the world or there may be no obvious cause. Anxiety is a child’s reaction to a situation, not something that takes over or comes on them from the outside.
In some situations anxiety is a reasonable response. For example, no one is surprised child feels a little anxious their first day at a new school or going away to camp for the first time.
However anxiety can become so severe that it in effects incapacitates a child. They can’t participate in life normally. When that happens, anxiety has become an anxiety disorder.
Although there are several indicators of an anxiety disorder, a very significant point to consider is whether of not the anxiety is so severe that it is interfering with the child’s normal functioning. If a child is so anxious they can’t live normally, we need to do our best to help them.
The difficulty for someone raising a child is that because they’re so closely involved with the children you can be difficult to maintain an objective perspective. Talking about the situation with close family members, professionals such as the child’s pediatrician and teachers, and close friends can help the parent maintain objective perspective.
